Variables feature, Weglot Academy, and project search bar

new Variables

We’ve now added a variable feature that allows you to combine translations that have similar (but not identical) content, into a single one. This is useful as it allows you to reduce your word count.

For example, "Order #324", "Order#325", or if a customer is logged in on your website and you display a message such as "Hello John," you may have several translations like the following:

Once you turn this into a variable, it will appear like this in your Translations List:

To create a variable navigate to your Translations List and click on the ‘see details’ icon next to the relevant translation, as shown below.

Read the FAQ variables article for the full tutorial.

NEW Weglot Academy

We’ve launched a brand-new learning platform, Weglot Academy, to give you an in-depth understanding and step-by-step video introduction to using Weglot, to help you make the most of your website translation project.

Our first course, Weglot Fast Track Training, can be completed in 25 minutes and gives you a comprehensive tour of your Weglot Dashboard showing you the most important features to help you manage your translations and customize your multilingual website easily.

NEW Project search

For those with multiple Weglot projects, we’ve now made it easier to find a particular project with our new search bar feature.

You’ll find the search option in the dropdown of your project list if you have at least 10 of them.

Advanced URL exclusion settings and synchronizing URL content progress update

newURL exclusion

In the ‘Translations Exclusions’ section of your dashboard, you can now make some new customizations when excluding URLs.

We’ve added two options, ‘Language button visibility’ and ‘Exclusion behavior’.

‘Language button visibility’ allows you to choose whether you want the language button to be shown on this URL even though the URL is not translated. If you keep it visible, the language switcher will be visible so visitors can change the language if they'd like. If not, the language switcher will be hidden.

In the ‘Exclusion behavior’ drop down there are two options:

  • ‘URL redirects to original URL’ means the translated URL will not be accessible and will always redirect to the original URL.
  • ‘URL exists but is not translated’ means the page is accessible by URL but will not be translated.

To access this feature navigate to your ‘Settings’ > ‘Translation Exclusions’ and ‘Add rule’.

new Synchronizing URL content

We’ve made a small update to show the live progress when synchronizing the content of your URLs, through the URLs tab.

When you bulk synchronize your URLs a progress bar will appear at the top letting you know the action is taking place and showing you when it has been completed.

To access this feature, navigate to your ‘Translations’ tab > ‘URLs’.

update Notification on Translations List

We’ve made a small update within your ‘Translations List’ to notify you if you have ‘Display automatic translations’ and/or ‘Make public’ switched off.

Excluded block description, auto-upgrade, and assigning translations update

new Add context to excluded blocks and dynamic elements

You can now add a description to any blocks you’ve added for exclusion.

This is helpful as it allows you to note down the context of the excluded block.

To do this, navigate to your ‘Settings’ > ‘Translations Exclusions’, click on the pencil icon to an already excluded block and add a note in the ‘Description’ field. Click on ‘Save rule’ to update it.

A description can also be associated with any dynamic elements you've added for translation in the CMS-specific tab in your 'Settings'.

update Search and replace

We’ve added a new option to toggle on or off ‘Mark as reviewed’ within the ‘Search and replace’ feature. By default, any word you replace using this method will mark the translation affected by this search and replace as ‘manually reviewed’.

You may want to toggle off this option if you’d like to keep the whole sentence/paragraph in which the word was included as automatic for later reviewing purposes.

To switch this off, go to your ‘Translations List’ click on the search and replace icon next to the search bar, make a change and then toggle off the option before you click on ‘Replace’.

NEWAuto-upgrade

You can now choose to switch on ‘Auto-upgrade’ through your Weglot Dashboard. If selected, your account will be automatically upgraded to the next plan if your monthly limit is reached.

This is useful as it means you won’t have any account disruptions and your website visitors can continue to browse your site in their language of choice.

To enable this feature, navigate to ‘Billing’

And, toggle on ‘Auto-upgrade’.

UPDATE Assigning translations

We’ve made an update to the email someone will receive when you’ve assigned them translations. They will now get a direct link to the translations they need to review and/or edit.

This is useful as they won’t need to manually filter by their name within the Translations List.

However, bear in mind that if they have been assigned to multiple translation pairs, they will only be taken to one language pair and then need to manually filter on the other translation pairs to find their assigned translations.

Glossary update, 2-factor authentication (2FA) live & import feature update

new Glossary now linked to URL slugs translation

Any rules you make within your Glossary are now linked to your URL slugs translation if you’ve chosen to automatically translate your URLs.

For example, if you choose to ‘Never translate’ a certain word and that word is within one of your URL slugs, it will remain unchanged once you click the ‘Auto Translate’ button. You can of course override this if you want to make manual adjustments to your URL slug translation.

To access this feature, first, create a Glossary rule within the Translations > Glossary tab. Then navigate to your URL Slugs tab and select all your URLs, certain URLs, or just one, then click ‘Auto Translate’.

The selected URLs will then be automatically translated and any translation rules you made within your Glossary will be taken into account here too. To make a manual edit, just click inside the box and make your change.

new Import feature error

When importing your translations through the Weglot Dashboard, you’ll now receive an email notification if there are any errors (a missing word) within your file import.

Any errors within the imported file will not be uploaded and instead, you’ll receive an email stating that some of the translations could not be imported and a link to download the CSV/ XLIFF file containing those errors.

This allows you to quickly see the errors, fix them and easily re-upload the corrected file.

This is useful as it identifies any issues immediately and ensures you won’t have any untranslated content on your site.

new 2-factor authentication

You can now activate a 2-factor authentication when accessing your account through the Weglot Dashboard. This adds an additional layer of security to the authentication process.

To access this, click on your profile within the dashboard and then on ‘Account’.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and toggle on ‘Two factor authentication.

A popup will appear with a QR-code asking you to scan it. Download the free application "Google Authenticator" or any two-factor authentication application and scan the QR-code to enable an additional layer of security for your account.

Once that’s validated, each time you log in to your Weglot account it will ask for an additional passcode sent to your phone generated by your two-factor authentication app.

Assign translations to someone, invite team members to project onboarding

new Assign translations

You can now assign translations to your teammates or to any translators you’ve added to your Weglot project.

This is useful as it allows you to instantly assign someone a translation to edit or approve without needing to send a separate communication outside of the Weglot Dashboard.

To access this feature go to your Dashboard > Translations and click on the translation pair you’d like to edit. Once you’re in the translations list you can select one or multiple translations, click on the 3 dots in the bottom right corner and ‘Assign to’.

Then select the person from the list.

The assigned person will then receive an email to let them know they have been assigned translations. To access the translations, they will need to go to the translations list and select their name from the filter.

new Add team members to project onboarding

For those on a Pro plan or above, it’s now possible to invite a team member to the project setup phase.

Once you’ve created a project, simply click on the plus icon to invite someone to set up your Weglot project. This is a useful feature if you’re not planning to be involved in setting up Weglot on your website.

Manage your inactive translations, glossary feature update and dashboard design

new Manage and remove inactive translations

You can now quickly see an overview of all your translations considered ‘inactive’. A potentially inactive translation is when a translation has not been viewed for a long period of time.

This might mean the sentence is no longer on your original website and therefore you might want to remove the translation from your Translations List for a clearer overview. This ultimately leads to better translations management as you’ll only be managing ‘live’ translations.

To access this feature, go to your ‘Translations’ tab. At the bottom of the page click on ‘See your inactive translations’.

This will take you to a table showing potentially inactive translations arranged by language pair.

Click on the potentially inactive translations and you’ll be taken to the list view. Here you can hover over the caution sign to see when the translation was last seen.

Sometimes pages on your website may not be visited very often but can still be important. To double-check the translation is definitely inactive, you can visit the associated URL of the translation(s). If the ‘Last seen date’ doesn't change within the next 48 hours and is still tagged as inactive you can be confident the translation no longer exists and therefore delete it.

To delete inactive translations permanently, select them individually or by bulk and then click the trash icon. These translations will then be removed completely from your Weglot Dashboard.

You can still make use of the filter when viewing inactive translations, by filtering by translation quality and type of translation to give you a more specific breakdown.

update Glossary import and language pair filter

Within your Glossary, you can now import your own CSV file of glossary terms. To do this, go to your ‘Translations’ tab and then ‘Glossary’. Click on ‘Actions’ and then ‘Import’.

Another useful feature is that you can now filter your glossary by language pair. This makes it easier to see a quick overview of your glossary rules by language.

update Weglot Dashboard design

We continue to make design updates to the Weglot Dashboard to make it easier for you to manage the various features that help with your translations management.

This month we’ve focused on making the appearance cleaner and more intuitive. As always if you have any feedback you can leave a comment here or reach out to us at support@weglot.com

Filter by untranslated slugs, delete slugs in bulk and custom flags

new Filter by untranslated slugs and delete slugs in bulk

You can now filter by your untranslated slugs through your ‘URL Slugs’ tab in the Weglot Dashboard. This is useful for quickly finding all your URL slugs that have not yet been translated (if you have chosen to translate your slugs).

To access this feature go to your ‘Translations’ tab and ‘URL Slugs’. Use the ‘Filter’ to select ‘Only show empty’.

To switch between language pairs click here:

Another new feature within your ‘URL Slugs’ tab is the option to delete multiple URLs in bulk. This is useful if you want to delete the slug translation, or if you’ve deleted a URL completely from your site, or excluded it from translation, this will help keep your URL Slugs tab clean.

Simply select the slugs you no longer want to remain in your list and click on the bin icon at the bottom.

Note: This action won’t exclude the URL from being translated - that can only be done in the URL tab. This only deletes the slug translations if you made a translation.

new Custom flags and edit the language name

You can now upload a custom flag or edit the name of the language that will be displayed within your language switcher.

To make this change go to your ‘Translations’ tab and click on the pencil icon next to the language you’d like to edit the name or the flag of.

Make your change in the custom name box and/ or click on the ‘Or upload your flag’.

new Whitelist

Through your Weglot Dashboard, you can now add a CORS protection when calling our Translation API client-side. This can be useful as it can mitigate the security risks involved with sharing resources across multiple domains or if you notice someone might be trying to use your Weglot API key without your consent.

To access this feature go to your ‘Settings’ tab and ‘Setup’, scroll to the bottom of the page and add a website(s) to the ‘domains’ box, then click ‘save changes’. Only the websites in the whitelist will be allowed.

Custom languages now available, updated URL management and glossary export now available

newCustom language

You can now create custom languages with Weglot. This is useful for those that want to display UK English or Latin American Spanish, or French Canadian, for example.

Note, this feature is only available for those on an Advanced plan or higher.

To access this feature, from your Weglot Dashboard, go to your Translations and click the ‘Add language’ button.

Then, ‘Not in the list? Create a customized language’.

To help with your custom language set up Weglot has created some pre-populated templates for popular options. But, if your language isn’t on the list you can manually create one.

For example, here’s a pre-populated template for Spanish (Latino):

Note, when you set up a custom language, you will choose the language that will be used to generate a first layer of machine translation. Languages such as French Canadian and UK English are available from MT providers, whereas Latin American Spanish will be by default Spanish, and then you can make your own manual edits.

However, this part is optional, you can start with your original content as the first layer of translation. For example, if your website is in English and you want to add NZ English, you don't need to select an automatic translation language.

To finalize your custom language, click on ‘Add custom language’. The language will now appear in your Translations List.

If you’re using flags to represent a language on your language switcher then you may want to make a modification to what’s displayed.

Go to your Settings > Language Switcher and navigate to the bottom of the page. Click on the flag and select the flag of your choice.

Don’t forget, if you’re using a subdomain integration you will need to update your subdomains and DNS entries in your domain name provider by going to your Settings > Setup and click ‘view info’ next to your new custom language and follow the steps. If you’re using WordPress this will be automatic.

updateURL management

Within your URLs tab, you can now arrange them by most and least translated to show you quickly how many of your URLs have been automatically and manually translated.

This is useful to quickly see if you need to sync a URL or make more manual translations.

You can also sort your URLs by most viewed. This can be useful in a number of ways, such as if you’re planning to manually translate your most important pages, you can immediately identify them through this feature.

Access it by going to your Translations tab > URLs.

update Export glossary

You now have the option to export your glossary. Access this by going to your Translations > Glossary and click on the ‘Export’ button.

You’ll then receive an email where you can download the CSV file.

Note, this feature is only available for those on an Advanced plan or higher.

New translation management by URL, customize your subdomains and URL slug translation update

 new Translation management by URL

Managing, scanning and translating your content just got an upgrade. With a new area in your Weglot Dashboard in Translations > URLs you can now see an overview of every URL on your website and the translated content linked to it.

This is particularly useful as you can see what percentage of a particular URL has been manually edited, if there’s a specific URL that hasn’t been synced yet (no translations found) or if you’re missing a URL entirely.

You can also easily add a new missing URL or generate translations from a specific URL if it’s missing from this section of your dashboard.

Other useful features include:

  • A search bar to quickly find a specific URL
  • Select which languages you want to view, either one language at a time, or multiple
  • Use the ‘Missing a URL? Scan your website’ button at the bottom of the page.

You can also delete or exclude URLs from being translated by Weglot too. Do this by clicking on the trash icon of a particular URL.

A popup will appear asking whether you want to permanently delete all the translations associated with this URL and whether you actually also want to exclude this URL from translation. This means the language switcher will not be available on that page for your website visitors.

Note: deleting a URL from the list will not stop website visitors from visiting the page in the target language. To do this, you will need to exclude the URL so it will no longer be available in that target language.

new Customize your subdomains

It’s now possible to customize your subdomains for those that are targeting specific languages for example, French Canadian or Brazilian Portuguese. In such instances, you may want your subdomain to be https://fr-ca.mysite.com instead of https://fr.mysite.com.

To do this you’ll need to deactivate and then reactivate your subdomains through your Weglot Dashboard and update your DNS entries.

Go to Settings > Setup and scroll to the bottom. Toggle off ‘Enable Subdomains’ and click ‘Remove’ when the warning message appears.

Then click on ‘Enable Subdomains’ to reconfigure your subdomain integration again. Follow the steps until you are at the image below.

Click on the language code which will allow you to edit it. For example, you could add fr-ca for French Canadian and then click the tick.

Then simply add that same subdomain code in the DNS records of your domain name provider to finish the process.

For those using our WordPress integration, you can also customize your subdirectories by following this guide

update  URL slug translation

You can now automatically translate multiple URL slugs at once.

This is useful if you’d like to bulk translate your URLs with machine translation and then either leave the translation as it is or make manual edits.

Go to the Translations tab > URL slugs.

Then tick multiple URLs or all the URLs, then click on the language icon at the bottom of the page.

Translate URL slugs, export source language only, clearer translations management

new Translate URL slugs

We’ve now made it possible for you to translate your URL slugs if you’re on an advanced plan or above. This is a useful feature for those looking to localize their website even further. This feature is available for WordPress users and currently in beta for other CMS.

To translate your URL slugs, go to your Translations tab > URL Slugs.

Select the language of the slugs you’d like to edit and use the box to either manually edit the URL slug or use the ‘auto translate’ button for machine translation.

Note, if your slug is found in multiple URLs, it will be translated across them all.

For example:

The word ‘features’ appears in both slugs, therefore if you choose to translate ‘features’ it will also be translated in the second slug too:

  • https://mywebsite.com/fr/fonctionnalites/benefit-1

Note: If you are using WordPress as your CMS you will need to redirect your default non-translated URLs to the newly translated ones. For example, redirect mysite.com/fr/about to your newly created mysite.com/fr/a-propos translated URL (this will happen automatically for other CMS subdomain integrations).

newExport source language only

For those exporting their translations through the Weglot Translations List, you now have the option to only export the ‘Source language’. This means you can export all the words on your website in its original language, without any translations.

To access this feature go to your Weglot Dashboard > Translations and click on the ‘Export’ button.

new Restore translation

You now have the option to restore your translations, whether that’s to the original machine translation or if you made numerous manual changes.

To access this feature go to your Translations, select the language pair and then click on the individual translation and ‘see details’.

In the ‘History’ section, click on the clock icon to restore to your preferred translation.

update Translations management update

We’ve now made it clearer in your translations list change history when you make an edit or approve a machine translation. Click on the ‘see details’ part of a translation.

Under the ‘History’ tab, you can now tell if someone has made a manual edit or simply approved the machine translation.

  • ‘Changed by’ is a manual edit by someone
  • ‘Marked as reviewed’ is approving the machine translation without making any changes
