Custom languages now available, updated URL management and glossary export now available

newCustom language

You can now create custom languages with Weglot. This is useful for those that want to display UK English or Latin American Spanish, or French Canadian, for example. 

Note, this feature is only available for those on an Advanced plan or higher. 

To access this feature, from your Weglot Dashboard, go to your Translations and click the ‘Add language’ button. 



Then, ‘Not in the list? Create a customized language’. 

To help with your custom language set up Weglot has created some pre-populated templates for popular options. But, if your language isn’t on the list you can manually create one. 

For example, here’s a pre-populated template for Spanish (Latino): 


Note, when you set up a custom language, you will choose the language that will be used to generate a first layer of machine translation. Languages such as French Canadian and UK English are available from MT providers, whereas Latin American Spanish will be by default Spanish, and then you can make your own manual edits. 

However, this part is optional, you can start with your original content as the first layer of translation. For example, if your website is in English and you want to add NZ English, you don't need to select an automatic translation language.

To finalize your custom language, click on ‘Add custom language’. The language will now appear in your Translations List. 

If you’re using flags to represent a language on your language switcher then you may want to make a modification to what’s displayed. 

Go to your Settings > Language Switcher and navigate to the bottom of the page. Click on the flag and select the flag of your choice. 



Don’t forget, if you’re using a subdomain integration you will need to update your subdomains and DNS entries in your domain name provider by going to your Settings > Setup and click ‘view info’ next to your new custom language and follow the steps. If you’re using WordPress this will be automatic.

Within your URLs tab, you can now arrange them by most and least translated to show you quickly how many of your URLs have been automatically and manually translated. 

This is useful to quickly see if you need to sync a URL or make more manual translations. 

You can also sort your URLs by most viewed. This can be useful in a number of ways, such as if you’re planning to manually translate your most important pages, you can immediately identify them through this feature. 

Access it by going to your Translations tab > URLs. 


update Export glossary 

You now have the option to export your glossary. Access this by going to your Translations > Glossary and click on the ‘Export’ button. 



You’ll then receive an email where you can download the CSV file. 

Note, this feature is only available for those on an Advanced plan or higher. 



Search and replace feature returns and new translations management update

update Search and replace returns

We’ve brought back the search and replace feature within your Translations List. This makes it easy for you to find and replace certain translated words quickly and in bulk. 

This is useful if you want to change a particular translation across the whole of your website. To access the feature go to your Translations List > language pair and then click on the icon next to the search bar. 

A box will appear where you can search your translations (in the translated language) and replace with a different translation. You can also choose between case sensitive or not. 

Click ‘Replace xx translation(s) and the change will be made in all of your translations in the Translations List and across your website - the translation will then be renamed ‘manually edited’. 

Note: the glossary feature is more suited to those that would like to set up a rule so a particular word is always replaced by a different one automatically, rather than manually using the search and replace. 

 

new  Filter translations by ‘reviewed by’ 

It’s now possible to filter your translations by the team member (or translator) that reviewed, edited, or ordered a professional translation. 

This is useful for your translation management workflow as you can quickly see who in your team has edited which parts of your website. 

To access this feature, navigate to your Translations > Translations list and use the filter to select the team member or translator from the dropdown. 

New translation management by URL, customize your subdomains and URL slug translation update

Managing, scanning and translating your content just got an upgrade. With a new area in your Weglot Dashboard in Translations > URLs you can now see an overview of every URL on your website and the translated content linked to it. 

This is particularly useful as you can see what percentage of a particular URL has been manually edited, if there’s a specific URL that hasn’t been synced yet (no translations found) or if you’re missing a URL entirely. 

You can also easily add a new missing URL or generate translations from a specific URL if it’s missing from this section of your dashboard. 

Other useful features include: 

  • A search bar to quickly find a specific URL
  • Select which languages you want to view, either one language at a time, or multiple 
  • Use the ‘Missing a URL? Scan your website’ button at the bottom of the page.  

You can also delete or exclude URLs from being translated by Weglot too. Do this by clicking on the trash icon of a particular URL. 

 

A popup will appear asking whether you want to permanently delete all the translations associated with this URL and whether you actually also want to exclude this URL from translation. This means the language switcher will not be available on that page for your website visitors. 

Note: deleting a URL from the list will not stop website visitors from visiting the page in the target language. To do this, you will need to exclude the URL so it will no longer be available in that target language. 


new Customize your subdomains 

It’s now possible to customize your subdomains for those that are targeting specific languages for example, French Canadian or Brazilian Portuguese. In such instances, you may want your subdomain to be https://fr-ca.mysite.com instead of https://fr.mysite.com. 

To do this you’ll need to deactivate and then reactivate your subdomains through your Weglot Dashboard and update your DNS entries. 

Go to Settings > Setup and scroll to the bottom. Toggle off ‘Enable Subdomains’ and click ‘Remove’ when the warning message appears. 

Then click on ‘Enable Subdomains’ to reconfigure your subdomain integration again. Follow the steps until you are at the image below. 

Click on the language code which will allow you to edit it. For example, you could add fr-ca for French Canadian and then click the tick. 

Then simply add that same subdomain code in the DNS records of your domain name provider to finish the process.

update  URL slug translation 

You can now automatically translate multiple URL slugs at once. 

This is useful if you’d like to bulk translate your URLs with machine translation and then either leave the translation as it is or make manual edits. 

Go to the Translations tab > URL slugs. 

Then tick multiple URLs or all the URLs, then click on the language icon at the bottom of the page. 


Translate URL slugs, export source language only, clearer translations management

new Translate URL slugs

We’ve now made it possible for you to translate your URL slugs if you’re on an advanced plan or above. This is a useful feature for those looking to localize their website even further. This feature is available for WordPress users and currently in beta for other CMS. 

To translate your URL slugs, go to your Translations tab > URL Slugs. 

Select the language of the slugs you’d like to edit and use the box to either manually edit the URL slug or use the ‘auto translate’ button for machine translation. 

Note, if your slug is found in multiple URLs, it will be translated across them all. 

For example:

  • https://mywebsite.com/features 
  • https://mywebsite.com/features/benefit-1

The word ‘features’ appears in both slugs, therefore if you choose to translate ‘features’ it will also be translated in the second slug too:

  • https://mywebsite.com/fr/fonctionnalites
  • https://mywebsite.com/fr/fonctionnalites/benefit-1

Note: If you are using WordPress as your CMS you will need to redirect your default non-translated URLs to the newly translated ones. For example, redirect mysite.com/fr/about to your newly created mysite.com/fr/a-propos translated URL (this will happen automatically for other CMS subdomain integrations).

For those exporting their translations through the Weglot Translations List, you now have the option to only export the ‘Source language’. This means you can export all the words on your website in its original language, without any translations. 

To access this feature go to your Weglot Dashboard > Translations and click on the ‘Export’ button. 


new Restore translation 

You now have the option to restore your translations, whether that’s to the original machine translation or if you made numerous manual changes. 

To access this feature go to your Translations, select the language pair and then click on the individual translation and ‘see details’.  

In the ‘History’ section, click on the clock icon to restore to your preferred translation. 


update Translations management update

We’ve now made it clearer in your translations list change history when you make an edit or approve a machine translation. Click on the ‘see details’ part of a translation.   

Under the ‘History’ tab, you can now tell if someone has made a manual edit or simply approved the machine translation.

  • ‘Changed by’ is a manual edit by someone
  • ‘Marked as reviewed’ is approving the machine translation without making any changes

Importing translations change, Visual Editor improvement, and Weglot Shopify App update

update Importing translations

We’ve added a new option to the import feature located in the Translations List section of the Weglot Dashboard. When you upload a CSV or XLIFF file with your edited translations, you’ll now see a new option to toggle on or off if the file includes translations that haven’t been changed from the ones exported from the Translations List. 

For instance, if you’re importing your translations and you have not made edits to some of the automatic translations but you’re happy for them to be displayed on your website, you can toggle on the option ‘Mark unchanged translations as reviewed’. This means they will now be displayed as a ‘Manually edited translation’ in your Translations List.  

If you don’t wish to do that, then keep the toggle off. Those translations will remain as an ‘Automatic translation’ in your Translations List. 

We’ve also made a couple of other small updates:

  • Emojis are now better handled in XLIFF and CSV imports
  • The type of content e.g. text, media, meta SEO are now clearly marked in your translation exports 

 

update Easier media translation through the Visual Editor 

For those editing through the Visual Editor, we’ve now made it easier to make a change to your media files. 

Simply hover over an image/video and click on the blue pencil icon to replace the media file and to edit the alt text translation. You no longer need to add the media file through your Translations List first. 


update Shopify App 

We’ve updated the Weglot Shopify translation app for an improved user experience. You can now use subdomains to display the translated versions of your store (e.g. https://fr.mywebsite/). 

This is particularly appealing for store owners who want an improved localization experience for their customers as the subdomains will now be visible to human visitors, instead of only bots. 

If you’re already using the Weglot Shopify app you’ll need to make a change in the DNS records of your domain name provider (you can watch our tutorial videos on how to do that). 

Essentially, you’ll need to create a CNAME entry with the 'host' as the 2 letter language code of the language you’ve added to your store, and then point it to websites.weglot.com. 

After you’ve done that, return to your Weglot App settings in the Shopify dashboard and follow the simple setup instructions once you’ve clicked ‘Activate subdomains.’ 


update Glossary 

When you add a translation rule to the Weglot Glossary such as ‘Always Translate’ along with your chosen word or term, any time the translation appears in your Translations List, it will now be marked as a ‘Manual edited translation’. 


Glossary rule update, change associated URL of multiple translations and switch between languages directly in your translations list

You can now add a glossary rule to one, multiple, or all language pairs. This makes it easier to set up glossary rules across your multilingual website. 

To access this feature go to your Weglot Dashboard > Translations > Glossary. Simply click on the ‘Add glossary rule’, add the word you want to make a rule, and then select which language pair you want to apply the rule to. 


new Associated URL

It’s now possible to select several translations at once and change the ‘associated URL’. 

Go to your Translations > select the language pair then click on the translations you want to change the associated URL of and click on the three dots in the bottom right corner. 

Click on ‘Change associated URL’. A box will appear, simply select the associated URL you’d like to add the translations to.

We’ve now added a useful button to your translations list that enables you to switch between your languages without having to go back to the translations tab. 

This makes it more efficient when you want to access your different languages and make edits. 


Disable subdomain integration, managed URL improvements and Hmong now available

update  Managed URL improvements 

We’ve made it easier to crawl your URLs by allowing you to select multiple at the same time. 

This is useful if you’ve added new content to several pages and you want the content to be quickly added to your translations list. Or, if you’ve added new pages to your website and you want to crawl several at once. 

To access this feature go to your Translations list > and select the language you want to edit. Then scroll down to the bottom of your URLs (listed on the left hand side). Click ‘Manage URLs’ and then select the URLs you want to crawl and click the ‘fetch’ icon highlighted below. 


new Disable subdomain integration 

You now have the option to disable your subdomain integration. This can be useful if you’ve started a subdomain integration, but you’re not ready yet or if you don’t want your translated pages to be indexed on Google anymore. 

To access this go to your Weglot Dashboard > Settings > Setup. Scroll down the page and toggle off the ‘Enable Subdomains’ option.  


new Hmong now available 

We’re pleased to now offer Hmong as a language option. This family of languages spoken in southern China, northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand is now available to add through your dashboard. 

Select multiple URLs at the same time, reorder your language switcher + visual editor update!

new Filtering translations by URL: select multiple URLs

When filtering your translations by URL, you now also have the possibility to select multiple URLs at the same time. This can be useful if you want to approve all the translations of multiple URLs or send multiple URLs for professional translation etc. 

To access this feature go to your Translations list > select the language you want to edit. Then use CTRL or ⌘ and click on the URLs you want to select.  



new Reorder your language switcher 

It’s now possible to reorder the languages in your language switcher. This is useful if you’d prefer to choose which language appears at the top or bottom of your language switcher. 

To access this feature go to your Settings tab in the Weglot Dashboard > Language switcher. Scroll to the bottom of the page and drag and drop the language to change the position. 


update Visual editor 

We’ve now made it even easier to see where a specific translation is on your website through the visual editor. This is useful if you’re updating a single translation in your translations list and you want to see where exactly the translation appears. 

To access this feature go to your Translations list > and select the language you want to edit. Then click ‘see details’ of the translation. Here you can access the visual editor. 

Once you’re on the visual editor, you’ll see the specific translation has been highlighted.  

New way to handle media translations, add glossary rules for professional translation and rename or delete labels

We’ve updated the way you handle your media translations. Instead of switching on ‘enable media translation’ in your settings tab (this is no longer available), you can now simply add the exact media URL you’d like to replace via your translations list. 

This saves you from having 100s of media files in your translations list when the majority of users only ever change a couple. 

To translate a media file go to your Translations list > select language pair. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see ‘Add a media translation’.  

Click on this button, then add the original media file URL and the media file URL you’d like to replace it with, then ‘Add’. Simple! Your image has now been replaced in your new language and will appear in your Translations list. You can then filter your Translation list by Media to see your Media elements. 


new Add glossary rules to professional translation order

You can now choose to send your glossary rules along with your professional translation orders within the Weglot Dashboard. Add translations as normal to your order - then when reviewing your order you can click ‘Include glossary rules’ if you’d also like to send these to the professional translator so they can take them into account when translating your content.


update Rename and delete labels

For those using the labels function, you can now rename or delete them. 

To access this go to your Translations list > select language pair and then click ‘see details’ for one of your translations. Click on the tab ‘Information’ then click inside the Labels field, you can now see ‘Edit labels’. 

Simply click on your label if you want to change the name or delete it if you no longer need it.


Updated statistics & usage, add notes to your translations and Portuguese + Brazilian Portuguese available

update Updated statistics & usage 

We’ve improved how the information is displayed on your statistics and usage pages. This now gives you a better oversight of your stats so you can quickly see important information for your multilingual website(s). 

It’s especially useful if you have numerous languages or a number of projects. 

Access your statistics via the ‘Statistics’ tab on your Weglot Dashboard. 

If you have more than one multilingual project you can view your project usage from the homepage of your dashboard and click ‘View usage by project’. You’ll then be taken to your projects page which looks something like this:


new Add translation notes

You now have the option to associate notes with your translations. 

This can be useful if you are managing the editing of your translations with a team or with external translators. Add a note so your other teammates have context to your update, or leave a note for yourself - helping improve your post editing workflow. 

You can access this new feature by going into your Translation list and selecting the language pair you’d like to edit then click on a specific translation See details > Information. 

Add your note then click ‘Save note’.


new Portuguese + Brazilian Portuguese now available

You can now choose between Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese so your website can target different Portuguese speaking markets with the correct spelling and grammar, allowing for better localization.
